Day of the Dead Dia de los Muertos

Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos, is a celebration of life. Death is just one part of the circle of life, both a friend and enemy. In Mexico the cemeteries, grave sites, are cleaned and decorated to honor and respect the life of the one who has passed. Fresh flowers and brightly colored paper and plastic flowers are placed on the grave sites. Mementos, recuerdos, belongings from the one who has passed and extras like Candy skulls, paper and wire skeletons, toys, jewelry, even cigars and tequila are brought to the grave sites as offerings to the departed. Fresh Marigolds are strewn from their homes to the grave site to mark the way home for the departed who may rise for the evening. Special foods and drinks are prepared and shared with loved ones in a party atmosphere with live music, great tales, dancing and singing. All in honor of those who have passed from this part of their life. Many families have alters set up in their homes as a memorial for the loved one who has passed on. .
