Overview

Hummingbird, Chuparosa or Calibri in Mexico, is the smallest of birds, some as small as a bee. Their rapid wing flapping creates a humming sound and they have a long bill for sucking the nectar from flowers making them a major pollinator. They move quickly but may be seen better while they are hovering.

These very fast, tiny birds hold special meaning in the Mexican culture. It was believed in pre hispanic times that the soul of a warrior who died in battle was transformed into a hummingbird also known as a Sun God.

These hummingbirds were made by artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico. They are hand carved and hand painted making each one an individual art piece. No two exactly alike. They are much larger than life approximately 7 inches by 8 inches with a small loop on their back for hanging.
